The back side of the castle and stone-walled gate is visible Saturday, Nov. 28, 2009, from the back side of the Hieropolis Castabala site. Hieropolis is known for Darius of Persia passing through in 333 B.C., its real permanence in history was 300 years later when it was the capital of an independent kingdom under Tarcondimotus. Tarcondimotus sided with Pompeii against Caesar and was killed in 31B.C. at the battle of Actium where the fleet of Marc Antony and Cleopatra was defeated.
