Four Chaplains Run
A volunteer directs runners during the Four Chaplains’ Run Feb. 22, 2019, at Incirlik Air Base, Turkey. The chaplain team hosted the 5K in memory of four World War II Army chaplains who sacrificed their own lives aboard the USS Dorchester by giving up their lifejackets to save others as the ship sank. In July 14, 1960, the Four Chaplains’ Medal was approved to recognize their heroic actions and to date they are the only ones to ever receive the medal. Members of the 39th Air Base Wing run to commemorate four World War II Army chaplains who sacrificed their own lives aboard the USS Dorchester by giving up their lifejackets to save others as the ship sank at Incirlik Air Base, Turkey, Feb. 22, 2019. The ship set sail from New York on Jan. 23, 1943, and was sunk by a German submarine on Feb. 3, 1943. Of the 902 members onboard the ship only 230 survived.
