Team Incirlik steps to remember Published Nov. 12, 2013 By Staff Sgt. Eric Summers Jr. 39th Air Base WIng Public Affairs INCIRLIK AIR BASE, Turkey -- Members of the 39th Air Base Wing remembered the prisoners of war and service members who are missing with every step during a POW and MIA walk and run Nov. 10-11, here. The 24-hour walk and run was hosted by Air Force Sergeants Association chapter 1660. "The purpose of the run was to remember the sacrifices that so many POW/MIA veterans made and continue to make in the name of freedom along with the families who never got to see their loved ones return," said Staff Sgt. Douglas Teutsch, AFSA chapter 1660 legislative chair. "When you're a part of an event like this, it's something you carry with you." More than 200 participants traveled more than 640 cumulative miles carrying both the American and POW/MIA flag during the event that honored the sacrifices of service members and their families. "Freedom is never free, so many people, both military members and their families, have paid such a huge price for all of the freedoms we have now and have enjoy every day," Teutsch said. "Taking time to remember them and their sacrifices is important for every American because it helps us ensure that sacrifice meant something and did not go unnoticed." Some who were unable to participate this year are determined to take part in the future after seeing the run and walk. "Unfortunately I was out of town all weekend and didn't know this was happening," said 1st Lt. David Liapis, 39th Air Base Wing public affairs officer. "I'll definitely try to take part next year though. It's an honor to be able to remember our POW/MIA brothers and sisters in a special way such as this."
