Airmen assigned to the 39th Maintenance Squadron, Crash Disabled Damaged Aircraft Recovery team, demonstrated the squadron's CDDAR capability for Col. Craig Wills, 39th Air Base Wing commander and Chief Master Sgt. Anthony Johnson, 39th ABW command chief Jan. 23, here.

Part of the demonstration included the inflation process of the pneumatic airbag system. The airbag technique is a last resort process designed to provide lift capabilities in the event of a damaged aircraft. The CDDAR team maintains the training and knowledge needed on various techniques in order to safely lift a damaged airframe.

A component of the team's responsibilities in the event of an aircraft mishap is to separately categorize damaged aircraft parts. According to the team's Air Force Instruction, they must have a set number of boxes on standby that meet certain criteria.

Tech. Sgt. Robert Jackson, 39 MXS CDDAR team chief, was recently able to save the Air Force $7,000 by reutilizing 50 boxes discarded by the base commissary. After researching AFI regulations for CDDAR storage, Jackson discovered the boxes fit the criteria.
