Samuel Siavoshi 39th Air Base Wing Legal Office INCIRLIK AIR BASE, Turkey -- New traffic laws went into effect Feb. 19 in Turkey, setting new penalties for traffic related offenses. The new law especially emphasizes the nation's effort to minimize drunk driving. A person driving under the influence of alcohol above .05 promil, which translates to about .05 to .06 percent blood alcohol content, will have their license revoked for a minimum of six months and will face fines of at least 700 Turkish Lira. Driving drunk could even result in imprisonment for up to three years. Drivers suspected of drunk driving or that are involved in traffic accidents will be asked by police to take an alcohol test. Anyone who refuses to take the test will automatically be punished with a 2,000 TL fine and will have their license revoked for two years. Lastly, drivers and passengers are always expected to wear their seat belts when on the road and those on electric bikes, mopeds and motorcycles will be expected to wear helmets and goggles.
