Starting March 27, 2015, Incirlik Air Base began offering an intermediate-level Basic RiderCourse 2 class to motorcyclists, here.

The course, which is composed of a one-day class, will be held once a month and provides riders who have completed the Basic RiderCourse, a chance to improve upon their skills. The course had been offered here previously, but was discontinued for several months after a large storm rendered the course unusable.

For motorcyclist, the BRC is an Air Force-wide requirement to ride on an Air Force installation. The 39th Air Base Wing Safety Office encourages all riders to take the BRC2 class within one year of completion of the BRC, then once every five years.

"This training teaches people a more enhanced set of skills, so they can avoid accidents easier," said Tech. Sgt. James Fountain, 39th ABW safety office NCO in-charge of investigations. "Motorcyclists always have to think defensively."

As part of the course riders learn the proper techniques for inspecting their motorcycle and what constitutes proper Personal Protective Equipment for riding on an Air Force installation. Students also participate in multiple exercises throughout the day, which are designed to enhance fundamental skills learned during the BRC.

"We all know from driving our vehicles around Incirlik and Adana that it is a challenging experience," said Master Sgt. Scott Fasulo, 39th Communications Squadron cyber transport systems section chief and motorcycle safety instructor. "It is more so with a motorcycle because there is more risk we're undertaking when we ride motorcycles in this area. The benefit to the riders is that they are able to practice this in a controlled area so when they are actually out in the street they can mitigate any risk by increasing their proficiency riding the motorcycle that they use."

To participate in the next BRC2 class riders must provide their own motorcycle with proof of insurance and PPE. The required PPE includes a certified Department of Transportation/ Economic Community of Europe helmet with a full-face shield or eye goggles, a long sleeve shirt or jacket, long trousers, over the ankle shoes and full-finger gloves.

Due to the constraints of being stationed overseas and not having the resources to provide motorcycles for the introduction course, the safety office will not offer the BRC here at Incirlik. Currently, the BRC2 class will continue to be offered at Incirlik, but the consistency of classes is dependent on the availability of certified Motorcycle Safety Foundation instructors stationed here at Incirlik.

"When [riders] come to Incirlik, they are going into driving areas that they are not used to," said Fasulo. "They can learn to mitigate the risks they take by increasing following distance, learning to slow down and taking safety courses like this."
