3 AF sirens civilians, dependents should know Published Nov. 5, 2015 By Airman 1st Class Daniel Lile 39th Air Base Wing Public Affairs INCIRLIK AIR BASE, Turkey -- The Air Force uses three different siren tones to inform service members and dependents about natural disaster and attack warnings. These sirens are standard across the Air Force to ensure personnel take the appropriate force protection measures and remain safe. Everyone should be aware and knowledgeable of siren tones for their safety and situational awareness. To better understand the warning sirens, below is listed a detailed description of each warning, what it means, and recommended actions. 1. Disaster Warning siren A three to five minute steady tone on a siren or similar warning device indicates a natural disaster warning such as a tornado, flash flood or wildfire. Once heard dependents should ensure all family members are accounted for and aware of the warning, listen for instructions from the base giant voice system or security forces and tune into the Commander's Access Channel for updates on the situation, information on the type of disaster, instructions and recommended actions. 2. Attack Warning siren A three to five minute wavering tone on a siren or similar warning device indicates that an attack or hostile act is imminent or in progress. Once heard dependents should take cover in a safe location immediately, ensure all family members are present and aware of emergency, lock doors and cover windows, wait for instructions from the base giant voice system or security forces personnel, and tune into the Commander's Access Channel for updates on the situation, instructions and recommended actions. In addition, dependents should remain vigilant for threats and report any suspicious activity to security forces personnel. 3. All Clear notification A voice will come on the siren or similar warning device simply stating "All Clear", indicating that the danger, incident, or disaster has passed. Once the "All Clear" is heard from the giant voice system, dependents should remain alert for secondary hazards, account for family members and report fires, injuries, hazards and damage to security forces personnel, and standby for instructions for base and community facility openings hours and normal operations. It is important to note that during base exercises, U.S. or Turkish command post will state: "exercise, exercise, exercise" or the Turkish translation, which is "tatbikat, tatbikat, tatbikat" (pronounced as DIK-KUT) prior to sounding the siren. As a reminder, updates and important information about warning sirens can be found on the Commander's Access Channel during exercises and real-world emergencies. If a dependent has questions during an exercise or a real world situation, they should contact their key spouse or public affairs at 676-6060.
