A Safe Incirlik: Cook safely this Thanksgiving Published Nov. 25, 2015 39th Civil Engineer Squadron INCIRLIK AIR BASE, Turkey -- The kitchen is the heart of the home, especially during the holidays. Personnel and families should always remember that safety in the kitchen is paramount, particularly on Thanksgiving Day when there is a lot of activity and people in the home including children. Little hands often love to be involved in holiday preparations; therefore, special consideration should be taken to ensure children's safety in the kitchen. Here are a few safety tips to help keep your holiday preparation efforts safe and accident free: · Stay in the kitchen when cooking on the stovetop so the food can be monitored. · Stay in the home when cooking a turkey and check on it frequently. · Keep children away from the stove. The stove will be hot and children are advised to stay at least three feet away. · Make sure children stay away from hot food and liquids. Steam or splashes from vegetables, gravy or coffee could cause serious burns. · Keep the floor clear to avoid tripping while carrying hot food. · Always keep knives and other sharp objects out of the reach of children. · Be sure electric cords from electric knives, coffee makers, plate warmers or mixers are not dangling off the counter or within easy reach of a child. · Keep matches and utility lighters out of the reach of children -- up high in a locked cabinet. · Never leave children alone in a room with a lit candle. · Make sure smoke alarms are in working order. Test them by pushing the test button. For more information on safety tips or questions during the holiday contact XXXX.
