The holiday season may mean gifts, decorations and well deserved time off, but it also means military pay raises are just around the corner.

According to officials, basic pay will increase by 2.2 percent for all grades and basic allowance for sustenance will increase by 2.8 percent beginning January 1.

"Two percent might not sound like much but every little bit helps," said Senior Airman Steven Morales, 39th Mission Support Group commanders support staff representative.

According to military.com, annual military pay raises are linked to the increase in private sector wages. Current laws governing annual pay raises guarantee that military pay will be at least one-half percent above civilian average pay increases, as measured by the Employment Cost Index, through 2006. Military pay raises may exceed these automatic levels if authorized and funded by Congress.

"Public servants do not expect to become multimillionaires; they receive compensation through serving and protecting others," said Tech. Sgt. Nechelle Coates, 39th Mission Support Squadron manpower office. "However, the pay raise is appreciated."
