Running for a cause Published April 24, 2007 By 1st Lt. Rose Richeson 39th Air Base Wing Public Affairs INCIRLIK AIR BASE, Turkey -- Chap. (Maj.) Kenneth Reyes was happy to swing by work on his weekend, especially when members of the 385th Air Expeditionary Group surprised him with donations totaling $1,801 for the Seyhan School for the Hearing Impaired April 21. When Maj. David Micklo, 385th AEG operations officer, was asked to come up with a fundraising idea during his deployed time here, he decided to organize a charity run. All of the proceeds would be given to the children from the Seyhan school. "I was determined to run as many miles as I could in 12 hours and pledges were made per mile," he said. "More than 15 people from the unit got involved with the charity and set up drinks and snacks along the eight-mile route." With Master Sgt. Kimberely Rose, 385th AEG administrative support assistant, by his side, they completed 57 miles within 12 hours. "We ran the base loop seven times plus one extra mile," said Major Micklo, "and she was my motivation through it all." Major Micklo and Sergeant Rose had other running partners that joined them for a loop or two during the event, which lasted from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Other supporters offered food and drinks at two stations set up along the loop to give the runners the energy they needed to continue. When the run ended, 385th members scrambled to collect the pledges coming from Pittsburg members back in the States as well as members here. "We've been trying to raise money for the day rooms at the school," said Chaplain Reyes. "Right now the day rooms are empty with no furniture or supplies. The 144 kids will be so excited -- what a blessing!"
