AFRC offers lessons in Turkish language and culture Published June 18, 2007 By Tech. Sgt. Brian Jones 39th Air Base Wing Public Affairs INCIRLIK AIR BASE, Turkey -- Many Airmen new to Incirlik will find the way of life outside the gate very different from what they are used to. The Airman and Family Readiness Center's Turkish Language and Culture Class can help Airmen during this transition and make their stay in their host country more enjoyable. "I teach the basic Turkish language like daily phrases and words," said Betul Onat, Turkish Language and Culture Class instructor. "(As far as culture) I cover a little bit of everything from religion, education, traveling and people to Turkish festivals and what we think about Americans." According to Ms. Onat, learning just a few words in Turkish can go a long way when interacting with our hosts. "Whoever comes to Turkey should take a language class," she said. "When we hear simple phrases in Turkish we feel you respect and enjoy our culture." "Learning the basic phrases and greetings will help those new to Turkey adjust more easily because they will be more apt to greet the locals," said Master Sgt. Paul Wallace, 39th Maintenance Squadron first sergeant who recently took the class. "Once you break the ice, so to speak, with a greeting of 'hello, how are you?' etc., you normally receive a friendly smile." The American and Turkish cultures are quite different. Understanding these differences can circumvent possible misunderstandings. "To Turkish people, one thing that can be considered nice may be considered rude in American culture (and vice versa)," said Ms. Onat. "If you don't understand the culture you could be disappointed and uncomfortable. When we understand each other's culture we can communicate better, even if we don't speak the same language." Turkey has much to offer outside the main gate. The Turkish Culture and Language class can make traveling around the country a pleasant experience. "This tour can be fun, especially if you get out and explore Turkey," said Sergeant Wallace. "Learning some of the basic phrases and greetings will make the experience even easier." The Turkish Language and Culture Class meets every Tuesday from 5 - 8 p.m. at the AFRC, Building 3850. The course is free and a new class starts the first Tuesday of each month.
