Later this month, civilian pay patients at the 39th Medical Group pharmacy may see a small increase in the cost of their prescription medication.

"There is a one percent average overall increase on the prescription medications," said Capt. Sean McNamara, 39th Medical Group Diagnostics and Therapeutics branch chief. "The updated cost only affects contracted civilians such as Department of Defense school teachers, VBR and National Security Personnel Program employees without military benefits."

The new rates are based on the Average Wholesale Prices as listed in the Managed Care Pricing File from the Defense Supply Center in Philadelphia, Pa.

Once the new rates take effect, there will no longer be a pharmacy dispensing fee. Therefore, some medication costs may actually decrease.

A pharmacy price estimator tool that will help patients budget for prescription costs will be available in the near future from the 39th MDG Resource Management Office.

Unlike stateside bases, civilians overseas may use the military treatment facility to get medical care and prescriptions, however, if their insurance carrier has a mail order pharmacy option, they may use that resource instead of the medical group pharmacy.
