39th SFS changes commanders

Lt. Col. James C. Collins, former Chief, Antiterrorism Assessments Branch, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Security Forces Center, Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, assumed command of the 39th Security Forces Squadron from Maj. Bryan Gillespie at 3 p.m. June 25 in the Consolidated Club Complex. Col. Jeffrey Hanson, 39th Mission Support Group commander, officiated the ceremony.

Colonel Collins is a fully qualified Security Forces Officer with more than 24-years experience in both active duty and Reserve assignments. He enlisted in the Air Force in December 1982 where he served five years in the Security Police career field. Upon completing a bachelor's degree from the University of Nebraska at Omaha, Colonel Collins was accepted as an officer trainee at the U.S. Air Force Officer Training School.

He finished OTS as a Distinguished Graduate and was commissioned a second lieutenant in May 1987. After serving as a flight security officer, flight commander and squadron operations officer, he left active duty to attend graduate school while maintaining his military service in the Air Force Reserve.

Colonel Collins returned to active duty following the events of September 11, 2001, with subsequent assignment to the U.S. Air Forces in Europe staff. He deployed to Kirkuk Air Base, Iraq, in November 2003 for six months and returned to USAFE until assuming his most recent position at Lackland in August of 2006.
