Incirlik online library has arrived Published Dec. 13, 2007 By Staff Sgt. Jeff Nevison 39th Air Base Wing Public Affairs INCIRLIK AIR BASE,Turkey -- The recent installment of a Web-based cataloging system modernized the 39th Services Squadron library by allowing Incirlik library patrons to search for library products from the comfort of their own homes. The system, which was implemented in October, can be accessed from any computer. Initially, users would swipe their CAC card for online use, however now, this is accomplished with the library card. "As long as they have their library card, any user (using the bar code on the card) can view an account and see items they've checked out," said Nicole Allison-Catalfu, 39th SVS Library technician. "They can also put items on hold that are currently checked-out by another patron." According to Emily Smilo, 39th SVS Library director, the system also benefits library employees. "As an employee, one of the benefits of the program is not having to deal with rebooting the server because of power outages," said Ms. Smilo. "We no longer have to worry about our server dying, loosing information or programs being ruined, which helps keep up productivity." The system allows customers to connect to any U.S. Air Forces in Europe library. "Putting libraries online is a trend going on world wide," said Ms. Smilo. "A Team Incirlik member going on a temporary duty assignment could check out the Web site of the base they are going to ahead of time to see what's in stock there, or reserve an item that's already checked out." Cataloging items will also allow members to reserve materials from other USAFE bases because the system links all libraries within the major command. "If someone is taking an online class, for example, and we don't have the educational materials that they need, we can go to another USAFE Web site and see if they have the items, and if they do, we can request for them to send us copies of those items," Mrs. Smilo said. "Also, if a customer wants to check out items that we don't have simply for recreational purposes, we can request them too." With the Incirlik library adopting this new system, 39th SVS is able to increase capabilities and save money in the long run. "It would have cost the 39th Services Squadron approximately $45,000 to replace the 15-year old server alone," Ms. Smilo said. "Comparatively, with this new system, and the annual contractual fees, we only paid roughly $30, 000, which is an obvious benefit by saving the Air Force money."
