New year means new opportunity to shine

Incirlik is an awesome place to be these days! There are so many activities in which to be involved. For example, this past weekend there was an outstanding in-house retreat sponsored by the Protestant Women of the Chapel.

The event's focus was to let your light shine so that the world may know. My questions to you is, what kind of light is shining through you?

Is it one of excitement, and encouragement, or is it one of despair and depression? Do we realize that the way we think about a situation could in fact change our attitude about that particular issue?

Is it a problem to be overcome or a chance to excel? You decide! How do you react to the daily churn of living on the "Lik?" Is it all about the inconveniences or is it an adventure? Once again you decide!

James Allen, a philosophical writer known for his inspirational books and
poetry, once said:

"Good thoughts and actions can never produce bad results; bad thoughts and actions can never produce good results."

Living in Turkey presents so many unique opportunities, but we have to be willing to remove ourselves from our comfort zone to experience them fully.

Yes, I am talking about traveling and exploring this historic country. But I am also talking about exploring our own neighborhoods, and the uniqueness of living in such a small community.

This small community increases our exposure to the more intimate aspects of each others' lives. I know when my neighbor's spouse is gone or someone is really sick, I have the opportunity to let "my light to shine" by offering to help ... walk the dog, cook a meal, watch their kids or just be a good listener.

It is your choice to be a helper rather than a complainer, your choice to get involved providing a solution rather than standing on the sidelines providing the commentary.

It is your choice to be a volunteer in the community rather than withdrawing and being depressed indoors. In being a good neighbor you are in "deeds" allowing your light to shine.

Being a good neighbor will compel you to take action wherever the need is present. So again my question to you is, what kind of light is shining through you?

This is the beginning of a new year don't miss out on the treasures that could be yours.
