Our time to shine: Let’s show ‘em’ what we got Published Feb. 1, 2008 By Lt. Col. Ender Ozgul 39th Medical Operations Squadron commander INCIRLIK AIR BASE, Turkey -- A few years ago, a wise but crusty colonel (at least that's what I thought when I was a young captain) shared a "mentoring" moment right before a major inspection. He stated "whatever you do, don't hide from the inspectors ... show them what you got". Since then, I have taken those words of wisdom to heart and often relayed them to other Airmen. Believe me, this will make a lasting impression and often sets the tone for the rest of the inspection. Last year during our Health Services Inspection, I remember an inspector commenting on how energetic an Airman was in describing the strengths of her program. This focused the inspectors on the strengths of our programs, rather than giving them the chance to search for weaknesses - of which there were none. My challenge to Incirlik for the upcoming surety inspection is to do the same. Don't give in to the inclination to run and hide when you catch sight of an inspector: have faith to go forth and shine. Interact and truly impress the inspectors with your expertise and knowledge. Be proud of what you do and show them that you know your job better than any other Airman or USAFE civilian. Give that great first impression and "wow" the NSI team. Your attitude will dictate the tone for the remainder of the inspection. We only get one chance to make that first impression. As Benjamin Franklin said, "Do not anticipate trouble, or worry about what may never happen." In essence, do not worry about what could go wrong; just focus on what will go right. Follow the checklists and procedures and don't "wing it." Our hard work will be more than evident to the inspectors. All that is left is to "show them what you got."
