Action Line 80105 - Smoking Areas Published March 10, 2008 By Anonymous 39th Air Base Wing Public Affairs INCIRLIK AIR BASE, Turkey -- Complaint: There is a sign posted outside the commissary exit that says, "No Smoking," yet every time I leave the commissary it is like walking into a wall of cigarette smoke. I noticed that there are people smoking behind the brick wall (which is made of bricks with holes in them) between the commissary and the Bxtra, and the smoke drifts right into the exit of the commissary. I believe that the regulation that covers this says that there shall be no smoking within 50 feet of any entrance or exit to a building, and this is closer than 50 feet. Can the smoking area be moved to a different location? Response: Thanks for bringing this to our attention. You are essentially correct although the AFI doesn't mention a specific distance but instead says tobacco use areas must be far enough away from doors, windows, and/or air-intake units to prevent smoke from being drawn into buildings. As such, people should not have been smoking in the commissary break area you referred to. You'll be happy to know that we moved the commissary's designated smoking area so that smoke will not enter that facility anymore. Thanks again for your concern for all our health.
