Summer fun, safety go together

Summer is here! We had our few short weeks of spring and have jumped smartly into our Turkish summertime.

It is now time for us to get back out and enjoy all this country has to offer from outdoor sports to hiking in the mountains to fun on the beach; there is a lot to see and do.

I hope every one of you will take advantage of this opportunity and see our host country. However, with this increased activity comes increased risk for accidents and injuries. Safety needs to be at the front of everyone's thoughts as we venture out.

Road safety carries with it the greatest risk for fatal injuries. As I discuss with every newcomer, road safety and warning signs may not be as abundant here in Turkey as they are back home. I need each and every one of you to be extra vigilant when you are driving. Also, when you are driving, give the road your full and undivided attention - don't be chatting on a cell phone or reading maps as inattention can have fatal consequences. It only takes a few seconds of carelessness to cost you or others their lives.

Historically, for the 39th Air Base Wing and Team Incirlik, our largest group of injuries come from sports. With warmer weather comes increased activities, some of which we have not participated in for quite a while. Make sure you work up to these events even if you believe you are in great shape as many activities use muscles that have been dormant all winter. Take time to stretch and work-up slowly in intensity as you shake off the winter cobwebs. Strained muscles and torn ligaments can put us on the bench quickly and decrease our combat capability and workplace productivity.

When out having fun with friends, watch what you drink. Alcohol related incidents often spring from the most well-intentioned beginnings. Drink responsibly this summer, remember 0-1-3 ... no ARIs, one drink an hour, and no more than three drinks per event ... responsible drinking. Of course, never drink and drive; that is a no-brainer.

I hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable summer! Get out and enjoy yourself, your friends and your family but do it smartly. Have a great summer and stay safe!
