Action line 80710- staff cars Published Aug. 6, 2008 By Anonymous 39th Air Base Wing Public Affairs INCIRLIK AIR BASE, Turkey -- Complaint: I am wondering why the base got new staff cars again. I have been here for just under two years and this is the second time they have gotten new staff cars. This seems like fraud, waste and abuse. With us fighting GWOT and needing to buy new planes to replace the old ones why would the wing get new staff cars every year? Please help me see the big picture. Thank you. Response: Thank you for taking the time to raise this important issue. Proper use of our resources is vital to all of us. Our vehicle management folks in LRS do an outstanding job maintaining a large vehicle fleet for not just Incirlik but all of Turkey. A good portion of this fleet is sedans which until last year had a pretty old average age and was actually too small. USAFE recognized this shortfall and we received many new sedans in 2007 and 2008 to reduce that average age and, more importantly, to reduce the costs of maintaining this large fleet. Besides exchanging new vehicles for the old ones we owned, additional cost savings were realized by turning in several long term leases on the much older and harder to maintain vehicles. And as an added bonus, these newer vehicles will save us money in fuel as they are much more efficient than the vehicles they replaced. Rest assured, no vehicles were purchased specifically to be staff cars, but this rotation over the last year was part of a country-wide balancing of vehicles and a much overdue cyclic replacement of older vehicles in the fleet. The Chevys which were the staff cars are still in service as part of our sedan fleet and you will see them doing other functions around the base. Thank you for your vigilance as we all help ensure our limited resources are appropriately utilized.
