Action Line #80711 - Trash Published Aug. 25, 2008 By Anonymous 39th Air Base Wing, Public Affairs INCIRLIK AIR BASE, Turkey -- Complaint: My husband and I live in Phantom Housing and normally walk every evening. Lately we have noticed several long construction nails in the middle of the streets (which we ensure we pick up so that folks don't have to purchase new tires) and quite a bit of trash in and around the construction sites. Does anyone ensure the streets are being cleaned so that folks are not having to purchase new tires due to the construction project and is there any one from the construction project that ensures the site is free of trash? Daily we are picking up cups, bottles, and other trash left behind. Thank you in advance for your assistance with this issue. Response: The contractor working in your area is renovating the housing units on Bolu, Afyon, and Isparta streets plus several units on Istanbul Street. As with any construction project on Incirlik, we attempt to minimize the impact to areas outside the construction site. We do this by installing the green construction fences, implementing specific construction vehicle routes and specifying contractor responsibilities for housekeeping functions. In this case the contractor has not complied with our base requirements. Here's what we're doing to fix this problem: We have sent a non-compliance letter to the contractor, giving them a chance to correct their performance. Secondly, our construction inspection team now walks the site at the end of each work day to ensure housekeeping compliance. Finally, if the poor performance continues, we will initiate contractual enforcement mechanisms. Thank you for picking up the nails and the trash. You set a great example for everyone at Incirlik! Civil Engineering and the Contracting Office are working together to ensure the contractor keeps standards up and does their part to eliminate construction debris and trash.
