Complaint:

I have noticed a lot of injuries involving the go carts that are pretty significant. I was told the go carts we have are more sand go carts rather than track go carts by the staff working there. They have also mentioned they have put in requests to CE for specific work that needs to be done out there to improve the area, but have been denied. Working in the clinic and personally taking care of these injuries that have occurred, I think the recurring bouts of injuries need to be addressed. Someone is going to get seriously hurt one day and we'll be taking care of more than just a broken bone. Please research this and help us take care of our people so we have no further injuries. Thank you for your time.

Response:

I appreciate your concern for our fellow Airmen and believe me when I tell you that safety is of great concern when it comes to off-duty activities. The 39 FSS, who operates the go kart track, takes great care in providing minimum-risk entertainment.
The specific injuries that have occurred in the last few weeks were a direct result of a few drivers not following the instructions given in their pre-ride safety briefing. The karts themselves are sturdy, specifically designed for off-road activities, will stand up to roll-over, and will protect passengers who keep their limbs within the kart in the event the kart tips over.
On the other hand, we have noted that some drivers have attempted to take some of the turns on the course in a manner that exceeds their ability. Their karts hit the path markers (old tires), resulting in a bumper-car-like effect which can cause the kart to tip over. So, in order to reduce the likelihood of tip over, the outdoor recreation office and wing safety have re-evaluated the course and will make some modifications to the path markers to widen the turns. We will continue to monitor the go kart track very closely.
Thank you for your concern.
