Complaint:

I have a concern about the signs that have been put up in front of the Library and down the entire street. I was told today I could no longer park in front of the library where I work.

I drive a Ford Expedition, but it fits in the parking space. I do not understand why I can't park there. I understand the big 6pk trucks and vans that are government vehicles that do not fit in the space and stick out into the road. But, my truck fits and does not stick out.

Now I have to park all the way at the bowling center parking lot which is really horrible now that it is raining all the time. I also get off work and it is pitch black outside and have to walk all the way to the bowling alley parking lot. It would be different if I was only visiting the library, but I work there every day. This is a huge inconvenience for me. We are also going to lose customers to the library, because if they drive an Expedition they are not going to want to park at the bowling center just to come in and get a movie or book from us at the library.

Can you please reconsider the privately owned vehicles as long as they fit into the parking spots?

Response:

Thanks for taking the time to write. The stretch of road you are concerned with is one of my greatest concern areas on the base. While it has quieted down since the DFAC is temporarily closed, it will get congested again once the facility opens in January. The danger to pedestrians and vehicles alike is very high there and even if vehicles "fit" in the spaces, large vehicles block the view of other cars backing out, vehicles on the street and pedestrians. This is a risk I cannot ignore.

I guess when it really boils down, we will have to disagree. The risk of harm to somebody is greater in my view than the very slight inconvenience of having to walk a block or two after parking.

Thanks again for writing. The safety of our personnel is my highest concern and I think this action is in the best interest of the community at large.
