Incirlik's SAC open to base personnel Published Dec. 12, 2008 By Senior Airman Erica Stewart 39th Air Base Wing Public Affairs INCIRLIK AIR BASE, Turkey -- Incirlik's School Advisory Committee is conducting its next meeting on Dec. 18 at 3 p.m. in the Incirlik Unit School high school library. According to DoD Instruction 1342, each Department of Defense school shall operate a SAC, with membership elected from among parents of students, professional school employees, and students, where appropriate, to advise the principal on school matters. Members and school officials alike are pleading for Team Incirlik attendance. "The SAC has the potential to be a great community resource but, right now, it's useless if the committee members are the only ones attending," said Denise Eaton, Incirlik's SAC's Vice-Chair and IUS parent. "We can only advise the principal on school matters if more parents and base personnel attend SAC meetings to voice their opinions." The IUS principal uses SAC as a conduit to change. "This meeting is the primary vehicle for two-way communication between the school and parents," said Raynard Eddings, IUS principal. "The SAC is the school's version of a town hall meeting." Like town hall meetings, the SAC discusses policies, activities, and administrative procedures. "Our SAC is handled in open forum," said Mr. Eddings. "Installation members, not just teachers, are a necessity because this meeting impacts the lives of current and future students." Some parents have taken these words to their core and live by example. "Not only do I attend SAC meetings but I serve on the SAC because, as a parent, it is important to involve yourself in all aspects of your child's life," said Ms. Eaton. "We definitely need more people to voice their opinions. You can't complain about school policies or procedures unless you step up, voice your opinion and do what needs to be done to see change."
