Turkish government to change currency name, introduces new denomination

The Government of Turkey will change the name of their currency Jan. 1. 

The new names will be "Turkish Lira" for the paper currency and "Kurus" for coins. 

The current name of Turkish paper currency is "Yeni Turkish Lira," or "New Turkish Lira" Coins called "Yeni Kurus" or "New Kurus". 

Even though "Yeni" or "New" is being taken off the name of the currency, the New Turkish Lira and New Kurus coins will be useable until the end of 2009. 

The Government of Turkey has also introduced a new denomination of "200 Turkish Lira". 

Therefore, New Turkish Lira, Turkish Lira banknotes and coins will circulate throughout 2009.
