Programs that had been prepared by pre-teen and teenage boys were performed for the American visitors. "This is a great chance for all of us to join you at a very special time," said Col. Rick Robel, 425th ABG commander. "Thanks for having us here when we are away from our families." More than 500 gifts were delivered to the boys' and girls' orphanages by a dozen Airmen, as well as local and U.S. civilians. The principals of both orphanages had previously provided a list of items needed and desired by children. Members of NATO and the 425th ABG military and civilian communities contributed clothing, school supplies, sports equipment and toys, which had been gathered in a short amount of time. "We are all very thankful, not only for your donations, but also your company. You are all very well received and welcomed as always," said Serdar Ortakaya, principal of the Dokuz Eylül Boys Orphanage. Upon arrival to the girls' orphanage, visitors were greeted with smiling faces in the school's garden. After helping carry the gifts with their visitors, all were treated to performances of singing and dancing by the girls themselves. Many in attendance were moved by the importance of the outreach program and grateful to be part of such a rewarding experience. "We give special thanks to all those who contributed to the orphanage outreach," said Chaplain Capt. Mark Nevius, 425 ABG chaplain. "Visiting the orphanages was an immensely enjoyable time and we were able to share mutual love and respect for each other." "In the end, most of us agreed, the children ministered to us more than we ministered to them," said Chaplain Nevius with a smile.
