Izmir Chapel Christmas Concert builds good will Published Dec. 19, 2008 By Tanju Varlikli 425th ABG Host Nation Advisor IZMIR, Turkey -- An audience comprised of North Atlantic Treaty Organization Component Command Air Izmir and 425th Air Base Group personnel attended the Christmas concert held Dec. 5 at the St. John's Cathedral in Montrö, Izmir. The concert was arranged by Dokuz Eylül University State Conservatory faculty members and students and, according to Chaplain (Capt.) Mark W. Nevius, 425 ABG chaplain, was a "significant event." "The concert was significant for the Izmir community as it brought us together to share a holiday concert that transcended our cultures," he said. "It allowed us to enjoy quality music and build relationships." The event began with a candlelight procession by university students and the song "Alleluia" performed by faculty member and soprano Linet Şaul. Then, with eight violins, two cellos, one viola, one cembalo, one piano, 30 students and five faculty members from the String Instruments and Opera Departments, the orchestra offered stirring and contemplative melodies, beginning with "Christmas Concerto Grosso" by Arcangelo Corelli. The event continued with "O Come All Ye Faithful," sung by faculty, students and audience members. The traditional carol "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen," was sung by prof. Jeanette Thompson and Linet Şaul who were accompanied by a choir. The choir and orchestra led by Professor Thompson also sang the African folk song "Kumbaya." The concert concluded with "O Holy Night" prior to the tree lighting ceremony. According to Chaplain Nevius, the impact of the concert will be lasting. "First, it created fond memories and opened the door to future events," he said. "In fact, the university has already agreed to do this again for the Izmir American community. Secondly, it demonstrates the good will between our communities," Chaplain Nevius said. Lt. Col. David Rega, 425th ABG deputy commander, concurred. "It was a truly memorable event for all involved," he said. "Any opportunity to bring our culture together is great, and to do so with such talented men and women leaves an indelible impression on all who attended."
