Action Line #90601 -- Dorm Parking

Complaint:

As I look around at the parking for dorm resident POV's, I've noticed that my dorm has no parking available. Specifically, there is no parking available for residents in Dorm 960, 962 and 964. These dorms are currently the SFS and overflow dorms. One thing I have noticed is that there are parking spots available, but for some reason 6th SOK Street is blocked from end to end. Is there a specific reason why it's blocked? Opening this street would open up several parking areas that would not only help dorm residents, but add additional parking for the bowling alley and theater. Opening the street would also reduce emergency times because no one would have to get out and unlock the gate.

Response:

The parking lots in the area you refer to are blocked in order to meet Force Protection requirements. All billeting and primary gathering facilities are required to have 25 meters stand-off protection from roads and parking by federal mandate (UFC 04-010-01). This is to keep an adversary from bringing a vehicle-borne explosive device up close to heavily populated buildings, such as what happened at Khobar Towers in 1996.

While we have limited options for fixing the existing problem, we are committed to improve the parking situation for those who follow us. The base is currently in the process of building a plan for new dormitories, and additional parking has been added to the requirements for these new facilities.

I understand the inconvenience of having to walk the additional distance from B Street or other available parking areas, but we are first and foremost dedicated to protecting Incirlik's number one asset -- our people.
