Action Line #90902 -- Base Shredder Published Sept. 16, 2009 39th Air Base Wing Public Affairs INCIRLIK AIR BASE, Turkey -- Complaint: Incirlik AB has a 100 percent OPSEC shred policy. Incirlik AB does not give its population a tool in the form of a large destruction facility or a semi-annual destruction mobile contract to allow personnel to easily shred documents to adhere to this 100 percent OPSEC shred policy. Attempts to correct the problem have failed: 1. I have contacted the medical group to use their burn facility. Non-Medical personnel cannot use their burn facility as it is for medical waste only. 2. I have contacted the fire department to have a massive burn day. You cannot use a large burn pit as paper is considered a class A combustible and cannot be openly burned in a pit. 3. I have contacted the base OPSEC office and they said that the OS Intel Office Pulverizer will be operational soon to shred (But this is not sufficient as you can only put one-inch thick paper in at a time and then have to wait for it to grind which takes numerous man hours and Intel is not responsible for the base wide OPSEC destruction) 4. I know of one other location with a semi-large shredder but it is very limited on time available and also only small amounts of paper can be put into it. I suggest the base fund a large base destruction facility to give personnel the tools needed to adhere to the base 100 percent OPSEC shred policy. Response: Great idea. We're going to make this happen, thanks to your suggestion. The 39th Communications Squadron has stepped up and agreed to manage the destruction facility. Funding is approved and we expect contract award by 21 September. The facility should be operational in December. Team Incirlik is teeming with great men and women filled with ideas how we can work smarter. If you have a great idea how we can work more efficiently, I encourage you to engage your unit leadership.
