Incirlik responds in big way, joins global Haitian relief effort

INCIRLIK AIR BASE, Turkey --  In response to the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that devastated Haiti Jan. 12, several private organizations from around base are joining efforts to raise money for those affected.

"There has been tremendous support from every angle," said Master Sgt. Taniekia Coleman, 39th Force Support Squadron and base Haitian relief effort coordinator. "Support has not only been from the private organizations, but from the folks in 39th Marketing and Publicity, Fitness Center, [Base Exchange] and Commissary. I think everybody wants to contribute in some way."

So far, the earthquake has left an estimated 150,000 dead (as of Jan. 25) and countless more injured and displaced, therefore the need for monetary donations is important for the country's relief.

The Company Grade Officer Council will oversee the Top III, 5/6 Council, Airmen Committed to Excellence, the Incirlik Spouse's Club and Boy Scouts who all have fundraising events planned over the next several weeks.

ACE plans to place donation cans at various locations around base including the shoppette, post office, military personnel section, finance and the bowling alley now through Feb. 8.

Members of the 5/6 Council will take turns bell ringing for donations at the BX from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. Monday through Friday. Incirlik Boy Scouts will also accept donations at the BX, alternating days with the 5/6 Council.

The Top III is hosting a community 3K walk, 5K run and 10K biking event 9 a.m. Feb. 6. All base members are invited to attend. There is no entry fee to participate, however, donations are encouraged.

Sergeant Coleman said the events are for such a good cause, people do not have to be persuaded or encouraged to give.

"People already want to get involved and do their part," Sergeant Coleman said. "I think it's just a matter of getting the word out."

Second Lt. Zach Van Valkenburg, 39th Operations Squadron and CGOC president, said these events are a good opportunity for people to pause, take a moment from their busy schedule and empathize with those affected.

"The most important aspect is bringing people from diverse backgrounds together to work hand-in-hand helping people in need," Lieutenant Van Valkenburg said.

All donations are monetary and will go to the American Red Cross on behalf of the Incirlik community.
