Complaint:

I live in Phantom housing and recently my tires got slashed, along with a few of my neighbor's tires around my block as well. That happened in the wee hours of the morning. I have also heard and talked with another person who lives on another block and their tires got slashed along with a few others on their block as well. Just one tire would cost me at least $200 to get here. A few of my neighbor's tires would cost them $400 to get here. My question is, sir, with all the vandalism going on just within the recent week. What has been or will be done in order to increase the safe keeping of our neighborhood? If the ones who did this do get caught and if they are kids, would the parents be responsible for reimbursement of the cost of the tire(s)? Thank you in advance.

Response:

Thanks for the question. The safety and security of our Airmen and their families are very high on my list of priorities.

The 39th Security Forces Squadron conducts scheduled patrols to focus on crimes in certain areas of the installation based on current crime trends. Therefore, as the result of numerous loud noise complaints received over the summer, SFS personnel began conducting additional foot and vehicle patrols within the confines of Phantom Housing. The duration and times of these additional patrols are random to avoid setting a pattern. When a crime is committed at a specific location, both the schedule and random patrols are adjusted to focus more attention on that area.

Regarding compensation for lost, stolen or damaged personal property within the confines of base housing, the Air Force has no direct compulsory ability to force parents whose children vandalize property to pay for the damages; however, parents may do so willingly. Civil remedies may be available for such instances, and you should consult an attorney to determine your options based on the facts of your case.

The 39 SFS will continue to randomly patrol all housing areas to provide the necessary protection of personnel and property. Should you have a problem of a similar nature in the future, please call 676-3200. As always, in the case of emergency, call 911. Thank you for bringing this issue to our attention!
