During the summer months, the pool is a popular spot at Incirlik, therefore the 39th Air Base Wing Safety Office has some tips to pass on that may save your life.

One major tip in pool safety starts with learning and practicing water-safety skills.

"Children should learn proper swimming techniques, use proper equipment and adults should know how to perform CPR on children and adults," said Master Sgt. Shawn Rice, the 39th ABW safety office ground safety manager.

In and out of the water, swimmers should remain alert while at the pool. They should understand the basics of life saving, so they can assist in a pool emergency.

Children should always be watched and never left unattended at the pool, and they should be kept away from pool drains, pipes and other openings, according to Rice.

The safety office also advises against consuming alcohol before or during swimming.

The rules of the pool, posted throughout the pool area, will also aid in keeping swimmers safe.

"Customers must obey the pool rules," said Mert Tasli, a head life guard at the Incirlik pool.

Some of rules of the Incirlik pool include:
· Taking showers before entering the pool
· No running on the pool deck
· Shoes are prohibited on pool deck
· Food and beverages are prohibited on pool apron
· Glass containers are prohibited in pool area
· Smoking is prohibited
· Children 10 and under must be in direct supervision of an adult
· 11 to 13-year-old children must pass a swimming test to swim by themselves

Tasli recommends swimmers stay hydrated during the summer season and to wear plenty of sunscreen.

These safety tips can also be useful when swimming at the beach.

Swimmers should be aware of beach conditions and should always swim in groups or have a wingman, Rice said.

"Safety is paramount and practicing safety steps around the water can save a life," said Rice.
