A group at Incirlik recently started a club with the overall goal to prepare Airmen for Incirlik's Half Marathon in September and the Istanbul Marathon in October.

The Running Club, an after-hours group, meets at 5:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays at the Incirlik track and 9 a.m. Saturdays at Arkadas Park.

"The whole idea of the group is to foster teamwork and to help runners set and accomplish goals," said Staff Sgt. Joshua Acosta, 39th Logistics Readiness Squadron fuels controller and Running Club creator. "Whether you are training for your next PT test or aspiring to run a marathon, this group will be beneficial for you."

"It's not running that is important; but rather, it's important to be active and have goals. For me, running has been a great method for learning how to set goals, develop a realistic plan and follow through with the plan," said Capt. Jonathan Murphy, 39th Air Base Wing Protocol chief and avid runner. "I honestly believe that there are other hobbies or sports that can do this, too. However, running is my preference."

Runners can expect one of two types of workout -- speed or endurance.

Monday's and Wednesday's training sessions consist of sprints and 5K time trials. Saturday's workout covers long-distance running, anywhere from five to 15 miles, depending on fitness level, according to Acosta.

"Running is not the solution to long-term weight control. However, it is a great way to lead to a long-term lifestyle change," Murphy said.

In addition, the club allows runners to meet other runners around base, share information about upcoming races and provide feedback about race experiences, according to Murphy.

"I've noticed over the last few years, that runners tend to have interesting stories," said Murphy.
