Donations sent via MPS unauthorized

In light of the natural disasters that have recently taken place around the globe, many individuals stationed abroad wish to contribute to relief efforts by donating clothes, food and other supplies.

The major obstacle is getting those supplies where they are meant to go. Unfortunately, sending them through the military postal service is not an option.

The Department of Defense pays for the transportation of mail between contiguous U.S. gateways and overseas, as well as inter- and intra-theater locations. Organizations and people authorized use of the MPS cannot serve as intermediaries for any organization or person not authorized such service. Thus, using MPS to donate supplies, even with the best intentions, is not authorized.

Many relief sites have the option to make an online monetary donation. It is important, however, that people ensure the validity of the organization before providing payment information. Bear this in mind if you wish to support relief in an area affected by disaster.
