Flag football season sacks Incirlik Published Oct. 12, 2011 39th Air Base Wing Public Affairs INCIRLIK AIR BASE, Turkey -- Airmen and family members joined their respective squadrons in the 2011 intramural flag football season opener Oct. 11, 2011, at Incirlik Air Base. The first game of the regular season matched the 39th Communications Squadron against the Wing Staff Agencies team. First half WSA won the coin flip at the beginning of the game and chose to defer to the second half, giving CS the ball to start. CS's first play of the season resulted in Christopher Kenny dropping back and throwing a deep pass down the middle of the field to be intercepted by WSA's AJ Hyatt. Hyatt, WSA's quarterback and safety, drove the offense down the field on their first drive and scored on a 15-yard scramble. WSA went on to convert on the point-after-touchdown making the score 7-0 WSA. Despite a long drive, CS's next possession had the same outcome as their first. Inside WSA's 20-yard line, Kenny threw a pass that was tipped up by Clay DeRogatis, WSA's linebacker and wide receiver, and eventually intercepted by Hyatt. The WSA offense again moved the football down the field, but failed on a fourth-down conversion on CS's 5-yard line, which would have put WSA up by two possessions. CS's last drive of the first half ended with an incomplete pass as time expired. "We came out guns blazing in the first half," said DeRogatis. Second half WSA began the second half with the ball. After a couple of completions, CS picked off a pass and drove down the field and quickly scored on a deep pass across the middle to Chase Gross, CS wide receiver, making the score 7-7. The next WSA drive didn't last long as they were unable to convert a first down, giving CS good field position. David Crespo, CS's center, was able to sneak into the open field and score on a long pass to make the score 13-7 CS. CS was unable to convert the point-after-touchdown. CS forced another turnover on WSA's next drive and scored another touchdown ending any hope of a comeback. The final score of the game was 19-7 CS. "The communications squadron made a great halftime adjustment and put a lot of pressure on our offensive line and quarterback," said DeRogatis. "They played a great game. We didn't get the (win) tonight, but I'm just glad the football season has started." "I am proud of our guys. We showed that our efforts during numerous practices and drills finally came to fruition with this opening performance," said Crespo, CS coach. "Their team came out strong and gave us some looks we weren't ready for. We made the right adjustments and hopefully we can continue the trend throughout the rest of the season." The late-night game featured the 39th Logistics Readiness Squadron and 39th Security Forces Squadron. In a close battle, LRS squeezed by the defending base champions with a score of 12-7. Games are schedule for 6, 7 and 8 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at the base track. The football season is expected to run until mid-November.
