Airmen and civilian employees within U.S. Air Forces in Europe may see a change in how email addresses look in the near future. For members of Team Incirlik, the change is expected November 2012.

The Air Force Network migration is the process the Air Force took to get all networks under one unified system. The migration is an ongoing project led by Scott Air Force Base, Ill., for the past couple of years. Most stateside bases already experienced the migration process; now it's USAFE's turn.

Master Sgt. Cesar Ramos, 39th Communications Squadron cyber operations section chief, has taken the lead on this migration for Incirlik.

The Air Force Network migration will change the way email addresses look by no longer having individual base names within the member's address, turning @incirlik.af.mil into @us.af.mil.

"The biggest benefit Incirlik Airmen will notice is the creation of their email-for-career account," said Ramos.

Some users who made a permanent change of station from units on the new network domain and have accounts created may experience technical difficulties in retrieving their old emails if they transition to a base not yet on the new network, like Incirlik. Once the domain is up to standards Air Force-wide, the email address travels with members from base to base. Users will be limited on the size of their accounts, but the email address remains the same at all locations.

Another benefit for members includes the capability to log in on any computer on the Air Force domain. This means if users go on a temporary duty assignment to another base, they can walk up to any computer connected to the network and log into the domain without requesting a new account at that base.

This migration also provides better security to the communications network, as well as increased efficiency of service when computer users experience issues.

"With the Air Force consolidating a lot of communications functions, this standardization of the network will benefit customers when opening tickets with the Enterprise Service Desk," said Ramos.
