Action Line #130101--Bike Theft

Concern: It has come to my recent attention the number of bike thefts that have been happening on base. The bike thefts that I have experienced have happened in housing areas. For some people on base a bike is their sole method of transportation at Incirlik, and they have kept them locked or stored in a safe area. We have wonderful security on base, however it is lacking in this area. I don't know if there is anything that can be done, on your part or on our part. It is becoming disheartening to live in an area with theft.

Response: Wing leadership is aware of the recent increase in bike thefts and it appears to be a cyclical crime. The bike thefts we have investigated are reported as "unsecure." Leaving a bike unlocked on a bike rack or in a carport contributes to the unnecessary loss of property. It is important to always be proactive against theft and properly secure your bikes with a bike lock to a fixed object to prevent them from being stolen.

As you mentioned, our Security Forces law enforcement does an outstanding job with base security overall and are on the watch for all criminal activity. We can all continue to assist our Security Forces by properly securing personal items to help prevent crimes of opportunity and by reporting any suspicious individuals or activity to the Base Defense Operations Center at 676-3200.
