With all the construction work going on around Incirlik AB, people may overlook workers digging holes and laying cable around base.

A major change to the base is coming as a result of these cables: an internet service provider changeover.

"The current cables are outdated and larger bandwidth is needed," said Master Sgt. James Mitchell, 39th Communications Squadron plans section chief. "We want to provide the customers with better service."

Another change that will come with the internet changeover is that phone lines on base will move from a DSN number to a commercial number.

People will also have the option to purchase high-definition television cable with channels such as the Discovery Channel and the History channel, and be able to watch them in English. The Armed Forces Network will remain available.

"This is a huge quality of life improvement," said Master Sgt. Peter Gigliotti, 39th CS plans section. "People will save money and get faster internet service."

Right now the 39th CS is ironing out details while the fiber optic cables are being installed, said Staff Sgt. Emily Gaffey, 39th CS information technology project manager.

"We want to keep customers informed ahead of time," she added. "Currently we are in the planning and implementing stage. The administrative work is done."

The dorms will be the first to receive the upgrade, Gigliotti pointed out. Also, those who live in the un-renovated housing will maintain their DSN and old internet service since those houses are slated for renovations.

As the changeover begins it's important to remain patient and flexible, stressed Mitchell.

"We live in housing too," he added.

More information about the internet service changeover will be released as it becomes available.
