In a continued effort to improve the quality of education the Department of Defense Education Activity provides for base children, the parent's voice is a critical one. How successful has DoDEA been in meeting base children's needs this year and are there areas where they have room for improvement? The parent's opinion is very important to DoDEA and contributes to the decisions the DoDEA educators will make about base schools in the near future.

One way parents can voice their opinions is through the 2006 Customer Satisfaction Survey. From now through Feb. 28, 2007, the survey will be available for parents and guardians to respond on the DoDEA home page (http://www.dodea.edu/, click on the CSS link). The survey has been developed through a review process of various groups, including the Department of Defense Department Schools and DDESS teachers' unions, DoDEA Teachers of the Year, superintendents, principals, students, and Education Directorate staff at Headquarters. Some questions have been adapted from the Phi Delta Kappa/Gallup Poll of the Public's Attitudes Toward Schools in order to have national comparison data. The survey also contains DoDEA-specific questions. The survey will give sponsors, teachers and students an opportunity to comment on their level of satisfaction with issues related to DoD schools.

The information derived from these surveys will be available this spring and be used to improve planning efforts at all levels throughout DoDEA. Schools, districts, and areas will use the survey results to gain insight into the satisfaction levels of sponsors, teachers, and students, which is one of many measures used for future planning of programs and services offered to DoDEA's students. It is expected that these results will assist schools in determining strengths and areas needing improvement.

Incirlik American School is requesting that one parent or guardian from each family complete a survey for each child currently enrolled in a DoDEA school, grades pre kindergarten/SureStart through 12. Families with more than one child in a DoDEA school should submit a separate survey for each student. As children's school experiences often differ depending on their grade level, completing one survey per child will help accurately identify successes and areas for improvement.
