INCIRLIK AIR BASE, Turkey -- Name/rank: Staff Sgt. Kathryn Hiles

Squadron:  39th Medical Support Squadron

Job title: Medical Laboratory Technician

Job description and how do you contribute to the 39 ABW’s mission?

Provide diagnostic testing for health care providers in order to determine diagnosis, treatment, and to determine health care decisions across the 39 ABW.

What is one thing you hope to accomplish while at Incirlik?

I hope to complete my Masters in Global Health Security by January 2017.

What has been your biggest lesson learned in the Air Force?

I learned during my career to look out for each other as wingmen and to help each other when needed and to understand that everyone has different priorities, views and cultures that make this organization unique.

Who inspires you?

My family has influenced me to be a driven and highly motivated individual. My little brother was diagnosed with autism at an early age and has never seen his diagnosis as a limitation for his goals. By seeing him accomplish things that no one expected him to accomplish made me highly motivated as well.

What is your number one goal?

My goal is to work in disease research.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years
?

I hope to work in health care research with the Centers for Disease Control or the World Healthcare Organization, working in disease research and prevention. I want to finish my PhD in Epidemiology once I leave the military.
