Incirlik kicks off African American Heritage Month

INCIRLIK AIR BASE, Turkey -- The 39th Air Base Wing kicked off African American Heritage Month with a breakfast observance at the Club Complex Feb. 3, 2016, here.

This year's theme is 'Hallowed Grounds' highlighting important landmarks and events in African American history.

Col. John Walker, 39th Air Base Wing commander, provided opening remarks on diversity and the importance of heritage months.

Master Sgt. Robert Mills, 39th Force Support Squadron career assistance advisor, was the key note speaker and shared information on the Freedom Riders of 1961.

The event was sponsored by the 39th Medical Group.

The following AAHM events will be going on throughout the rest of the month:

- Base library reading and crafts; Feb. 2, 9 and 16, 10 a.m. - 11 a.m.

- Taste of Soul; Feb 11, 11 a.m. outside Base Exchange

- Showtime at the 'Lik; Feb 27, 6 p.m. at the Community Center
